Fizzback’s Chairman, Jonathan McKay, applied his characteristic focus, determination and vision to complete the ‘2010 Deloitte Ride Across Britain’, earlier this month; all 1050 miles of it!

The Deloitte Ride Across Britain ran for the first time this summer, and despite battling 45mph winds, winter temperatures, rain on arrival in John O’Groats and negotiating some of the most infamous road hills in the UK, more than 550 riders endured the gruelling 80 hours of cycling to cross the finish line. Jonathan completed the mammoth journey in just 9 days, cycling an average of 9 hours per day. If that wasn’t demanding enough, the route taken climbed 73,000 feet, equivalent to cycling up and down Everest two and a half times! Jonathan’s achievement is particularly impressive as he also battled through the pain of an old knee injury to complete the ride.

Jonathan and his team wore jerseys sponsored by Fizzback as they pedalled through the country, and McKay recorded the events in his entertaining blog; http://oldmeninlycra.blogspot.com/.

Thanks to some generous support, Jonathan raised more than £9,000 in sponsorship for his chosen charity, Dreamflight. Dreamflight is a UK charity that takes seriously ill children on life changing holidays to Orlando, Florida. Dreamflight charters a 747 jet for each trip, and pays for medical care including doctors, nurses and carers, for each child. It’s a costly venture, requiring £3000 for each of the 192 children taken. This means that Jonathan’s Marathon effort has given three deserving children the trip of a lifetime.

Jonathan said “I really like the idea of small charities where there is a direct connection between the donation and the people that get help. This is certainly the case with Dreamflight where we know the founder and many of the helpers.”

About Dreamflight

Dreamflight is a registered UK charity that changes young lives through taking seriously ill and disabled children, without their parents, on the holiday of a lifetime to Orlando, Florida.

Once a year, 192 deserving children from all over the UK, accompanied by a team of medical carers, board a chartered Boeing 747 and head to Florida to spend 10 magical days of fun and excitement. Many children could not undertake such a trip without the support of the army of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and non-medical volunteers who care for the children 24 hours a day.
